Homebound – Stay active, stay fit
She is 85 years old and had an active life till the age of 66 when she retired from her laundry business. Since then, she has been enjoying life in fairly good health despite her loss of balance among other minor aches.
Most of the day she sits in her living room in the same sofa chair her daughters offered her 35 years ago. She knits, listens to classical music on the radio and watches TV.
Amy is not overweight even though she is not slim. She enjoys tea and biscuits in the morning and in the afternoon. She eats balanced meals. In fact, she only has to walk about 50m to get to a fairly large grocery store where she gets all her food and have heavy products delivered to her home. She walks there about twice a week and that is about all the sport she does. She is not moving much and feels very lonely as her family does not show up on week days. She is lacking of motivation to do more walks and exercises eventhough they would be much needed to sustain her fairly good health.
In fact, even though Amy is fine, she is at stake. She is already treated for swollen legs and water retention. Her breath is short and uncomfortable at times. Her balance is not good. She is exposed to falls or other injuries which could easily prevented.
If Amy were to engage with a home Physiotherapy program, she could easily get rid of all her aches and problems in no time. She could afford it but she does not see the benefit she would get in engaging a Physiotherapist. She needs to be motivated by her doctor and her family. She must be explained how a little more exercice every week could bring her more comfort daily.
How is it possible that her daughters are doing quite a bit of sports, yoga and golf and not relay the message to their mother ? They want to keep their good shape and good health. They find just normal for them to move a lot. However, when it comes to their Mother they just completely forgot that it is as important for her to move as much as they do and engage in some mild activities.
At her age and condition, their Mother can no longer go to a conventional sport facility but a Home Physiotherapist could show her and do a few exercises that could help a lot and prevent serious complications.
